The shapes of Princess Cut and Asscher Cut Engagement Rings are very similar with subtle differences. A Princess cut diamond has sharper corners than an Asscher cut with 90 degree and 45 degree angle corners, respectively. An Asscher cut focuses on depth and clarity whereas a princess-cut is more geared towards enhancing sparkle.

All Fancy-cut diamonds, including Princess, Heart and indeed Asscher cut diamonds are generally more seldom seen which adds to their rarity and uniqueness, making them perfect for those who are looking for a non-traditional piece.

The Asscher-Cut is named after Joseph Asscher, who patented the cut in 1902. The cut became popular during the art deco period but lost popularity during World War 2 when the patent ran out and jewellers attempted in vain to replicate the cut. In the 1980’s the Asscher Diamond Co. were granted a royal title by Queen Juliana of the Netherlands. In 2001, Joseph Asschers grandchildren officially named the cut ‘The Royal Asscher Cut’.
