How to clean an engagement ring

For many of us, our engagement ring will be the most precious piece of jewellery we will ever own. Whether we are given a traditional solitaire cut diamond ring in white gold or a more audacious ring with a heart shaped stone, such an important piece must be treated with care and precision. Everyday products such as hand creams and make up can create a build up on your ring, reducing your stone’s sparkle. Your engagement ring was made to dazzle and impress, so keeping it clean is very important. We have compiled a few helpful tips on how to clean your ring with out reducing its sparkle.

How do I clean my engagement ring at home?

There are number of ways to clean your ring – but often these include abrasive products that will lead to dulling the stone or metal of you ring. You should only ever use soap and water when cleaning jewellery as any other product could contain an abrasive element that could ruin your ring. Follow our below steps to maintain the stunning gleam of your engagement ring:

For this cleaning method, you need a small receptacle, washing up liquid, a child’s toothbrush and a cotton or microfibre cloth.

  1. Fill the small receptacle with hot/warm water and washing up liquid.
  2. Let the ring soak for 20-40 minutes.
  3. Remove the ring from the cleaning solution and gently brush the ring with your toothbrush. Move the toothbrush in a small circular motion.
  4. Rinse the ring with warm water.
  5. Dry your ring lightly and delicately with your cotton or microfibre cloth. Other material such as kitchen towel may scratch the metal.
  6. Polish the ring with a polishing cloth for that extra shine.

Can you clean your engagement ring too much?

The short answer is no, not if you follow our above cleaning tips. If you use gentle cleaning products to soak your ring and dry it with a soft cloth made from cotton or microfibre, you could clean it every day without damaging it! However, if you use harsh chemicals to clean your jewellery, you may find that you unintentionally dull your ring in a way that cannot be rectified through a couple of minutes polishing. So, if you are cleaning your engagement ring properly, no, you cannot clean it too much.

How to keep your engagement ring clean

Although we recommend cleaning your engagement ring once a week, we understand that this can be time consuming. A lot of people keep their ring on their finger every second of every day. Of course, as a symbol of you and your partner’s eternal love, this makes sense. However, taking your ring off when completing activities such as gardening, putting on make up or cooking could keep your ring gleaming for longer! We recommend investing in a few ring dishes and setting these up around the house – this means when you take your ring off, you can simply place it in a nearby ring dish, reducing the likelihood of you losing it.

How often to clean your engagement ring

Many people wear their engagement ring 24/7 and only remove it to clean. This means that the ring is exposed to all sorts of filth such as the natural oils on your hands and everyday products like make up. Because of this constant exposure, we recommend cleaning your engagement once a week.

We also advise that you have all your diamond jewellery cleaned by a professional at least once a year. Everyday items such as a wedding ring, or an engagement ring should be cleaned more often, perhaps two times a year.

If you’re looking to have you ring cleaned by professionals, we offer a ring cleaning service at our Jewellery Quarter Store. If you want any more information on or advice on cleaning your diamond ring, contact a member of our friendly sales team today!
